Why Does My AC Keep Tripping the Breaker?

When your air conditioner suddenly shuts off on a hot day, checking the electrical panel may reveal that the breaker has tripped. Resetting it can get the AC running again, but that does not mean the problem has been resolved.

A breaker is designed to shut off electricity when the circuit becomes overloaded or detects an unsafe electrical condition. If your AC is tripping the breaker more than once, something is making the equipment draw more power than it should.

Repeatedly resetting the breaker can allow the underlying problem to worsen. Instead, it is important to understand what may be causing the trip and when your air conditioner should remain off until it can be inspected.

What It Means When Your AC Trips the Breaker

Your air conditioner uses a significant amount of electricity, particularly when the compressor and motors start. The circuit and breaker should be sized to handle that demand during normal operation.

When electrical demand exceeds a safe level, the breaker trips to prevent power from reaching the equipment. This may happen because the AC is overheating, airflow is restricted, an internal part is failing, or the circuit itself has a problem.

One isolated trip does not always mean a major repair is needed. A power surge or temporary overload can sometimes be responsible. However, a breaker that trips again after being reset is a clear warning that the issue needs professional attention.

6 Reasons Your AC Keeps Tripping the Breaker

Several cooling and electrical problems can cause repeated breaker trips. Some begin with a simple maintenance issue, while others involve damaged components that require professional testing.

1. The Air Filter Is Too Dirty

A clogged air filter restricts the amount of air moving through your AC. The blower then has to work harder and run longer to circulate cooled air throughout the home.

That added strain can cause the blower motor to overheat or draw more electricity than normal. In severe cases, the breaker trips to prevent the motor or wiring from becoming dangerously hot.

Replacing a dirty filter may resolve the airflow restriction, but the AC should still be inspected if the breaker continues to trip afterward. Routine AC maintenance can also catch airflow concerns and worn parts before they lead to an unexpected shutdown.

2. The Outdoor Unit Cannot Release Heat

The outdoor AC unit releases the heat removed from inside your home. When airflow around the condenser is blocked, heat can become trapped inside the equipment, forcing the compressor to work harder.

Common obstructions include:

  • Dirt buildup on the condenser coil
  • Grass clippings or leaves around the cabinet
  • Shrubs growing too close to the unit
  • Debris caught between the metal fins

As the AC struggles to release heat, it may draw more electricity and eventually trip the breaker. Homeowners can clear loose debris and trim nearby vegetation, but the coil itself should be cleaned carefully to avoid damaging the fins or electrical components.

3. The Evaporator Coil Is Frozen

The indoor evaporator coil can freeze when it does not receive enough warm air or when another cooling problem causes its temperature to drop. A dirty filter is one possible cause, but low refrigerant, blower trouble, and blocked airflow can also contribute.

Once ice forms, the AC may run for extended periods without properly cooling the home. The added workload places more strain on the compressor and other components, which may eventually cause the breaker to trip.

You may notice ice on the refrigerant line, weak airflow, warm air from the vents, or water near the indoor equipment after the ice begins to melt. If you notice these signs, turn off the AC. Allowing it to keep running will not cool the home and could lead to more expensive damage.

4. A Motor or Capacitor Is Failing

Your air conditioner depends on motors to run the blower and outdoor fan. Capacitors provide the electrical boost these components need to start and continue operating.

Signs that a motor or capacitor may be failing include:

  • Humming without the fan starting
  • Clicking when the AC tries to turn on
  • A fan that starts slowly or stops unexpectedly
  • Buzzing from the indoor or outdoor equipment
  • A breaker that trips during startup

As these parts wear down, they may draw more electricity than normal. Because capacitors can retain an electrical charge even after the AC is turned off, testing and replacement should be handled by a trained technician.

5. The Compressor Is Drawing Too Much Power

The compressor circulates refrigerant between the indoor and outdoor equipment to remove heat from your home. Because it uses a large amount of electricity, compressor trouble can quickly lead to repeated breaker trips.

Internal wear, overheating, electrical damage, or difficulty starting can cause the compressor to draw excessive power. In some cases, the breaker trips immediately when the AC turns on. In others, the equipment may run briefly before shutting down.

Compressor trouble does not automatically mean the entire AC needs to be replaced. A professional AC repair visit can determine whether the compressor is responsible or whether a less costly electrical part is causing similar symptoms.

6. There Is a Wiring or Breaker Problem

The problem may be in the wiring, electrical connections, or breaker rather than the cooling equipment. Connections can loosen, wires can become damaged, and an aging breaker may begin tripping under normal electrical demand.

Warning signs of an electrical problem include:

  • A burning or melting odor
  • Buzzing near the electrical panel
  • Discoloration around the breaker
  • A breaker that feels unusually hot
  • Other circuits tripping around the same time

An AC also requires a dedicated circuit that meets the equipment’s electrical requirements. Installing a larger breaker is not a safe fix because the existing wiring may not be rated to carry the additional current.
